AORTIC REGURGITAION |

Quotation |

Definition |
Incompetence of the aortic valve leading to regurgitant blood during ventricular diastole. |
Prognosis |
Significant aortic regurgitation is well tolerated for many years before heart failure develops. Upto 90% of patients with mild to moderate regurgitation survive for 10 years. Acute regurgitation presents with pulmonary congestion and edema needing surgical valve replacement, often as an emergency. Once symptoms occur chronic regurgitation carries a poor prognosis without surgery. But medical treatment can improve their condition until ultimately surgery is offered |
